The Twin Chimneys of the Royal Kitchen
The most defining feature of the Sintra National Palace is the pair of enormous, 33-metre-high conical chimneys that rise from the royal kitchens. Built in the 15th century under King João I, these structures are not just architectural curiosities but were a marvel of medieval engineering. They were designed to serve the vast kitchens where enormous banquets were prepared for the entire royal court.
Sintra was a royal hunting ground, and these kitchens were where the game, such as wild boar, would be roasted whole to feed hundreds of nobles and courtiers. The chimneys' unique shape efficiently funnelled smoke away from the multiple large hearths below. Today, they stand as the unmistakable symbol of Sintra, visible from all over the town and a testament to the palace's long and storied history as the heart of the Portuguese court.
